Your Google Business Profile, done properly.

It is the single most valuable free asset a restaurant has, and most are half filled in. This is what to fix, in the order it pays.

In short

A restaurant Google Business Profile needs a correct primary category, full opening hours including holidays, a direct ordering link, a menu link, at least 20 recent photos, and a habit of replying to reviews. The primary category and the ordering link move the most volume, because they decide which searches you appear in and what happens when somebody taps.

Why the profile matters more than the website

Somebody hungry within a mile of you searches on a phone. What they see first is not your website. It is a map pack of three businesses with a photo, a star rating and a button. Most of the decision happens there, before anybody clicks through to anything. The profile is the shopfront now, and unlike your website it costs nothing and Google fills the traffic in for you.

  • It is free, and it ranks ahead of your own site on your own name
  • The photo and the rating do most of the persuading
  • The buttons decide whether the order lands with you or a marketplace

Get the primary category right first

Your primary category is the biggest single lever on the profile and the one most often wrong. Google matches searches to it heavily, so a curry house filed under "Restaurant" instead of "Indian restaurant" quietly loses every "indian near me" search in the area. Pick the most specific category that genuinely describes you, then add secondary categories for the rest.

  • Primary: the most specific accurate category, not the broadest
  • Secondary: takeaway, delivery, whatever else genuinely applies
  • Do not stuff categories you cannot serve, it dilutes the match

Hours, including the ones nobody updates

Wrong hours are worse than no hours, because somebody walks to a closed door and leaves a one-star review about it. Set your normal week, then set the special hours for bank holidays, Christmas and any week you close. Google prompts you for these and most owners dismiss the prompt. If you do delivery until later than you do collection, say so in the more-hours fields rather than leaving people to guess.

The two links that decide where the order goes

There are two link fields worth arguing about: the order link and the menu link. If you leave the order link empty, Google will often populate it with whatever marketplace has an integration, which means a search for your name by name ends with you paying commission on a customer who was already yours. Point the order link at your own ordering page and the menu link at your own menu.

  • Order link: your own ordering page, not a marketplace
  • Menu link: a real menu page, not a PDF that loads slowly on a phone
  • Check both quarterly, they get overwritten

Photos, and how many is enough

Profiles with recent photography get looked at longer, and the food photos people actually want are the ones that look like what arrives, not styled stock. Aim for twenty or more, refreshed a few times a year. Cover the food, the room, the front of the building so people can find the door, and the team if they are willing. Here is the honest limit: photos help you convert the people who already found you. They do not much help you get found in the first place. Fix the category before you book a photographer.

Replying to reviews is ranking work, not just manners

Reply to everything, good and bad, within a few days. Two reasons. The obvious one is that a considered reply to a bad review reads better to the next person than the review itself. The less obvious one is that review volume and freshness feed local ranking, and a profile with active replies signals a business that is still trading. Keep the replies short and specific. A copy-pasted reply on twenty reviews looks exactly like what it is.

Questions, answered straight.

How long does it take for changes to show?

Most edits appear within a few minutes to a few days. Category and name changes can take longer because they sometimes go for review, and edits to an address almost always do.

Can I stop marketplaces appearing on my profile?

You can set your own order link, which is what most owners never do, and that puts your ordering first. You cannot always remove third-party links entirely, because Google surfaces providers it has integrations with. Filling in your own link is the part you control.

Do posts on the profile do anything?

A little, and less than most agencies claim. They are worth doing for a genuine offer, a closure or a new menu. They are not worth a weekly slot in your diary if nothing has changed.

How many reviews do I need?

More than the shops you compete with, which is a moving target rather than a number. Volume and recency matter more than a perfect score. A profile with 200 reviews at 4.4 usually beats one with 30 at 5.0.
