Guide
Local SEO, for people with a kitchen to run.
You do not need an agency retainer to rank in your own postcode. You need about six things right and the patience to leave them alone.
In short
Local restaurant rankings are driven mainly by relevance, distance and prominence. In practice that means a correct primary category, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent name, address and phone details across the web, a fast mobile page for each location, and a steady flow of recent reviews. Distance you cannot change, which is why the other levers matter more than most owners assume.

The three things Google is weighing
Google says local ranking comes down to relevance, distance and prominence, and that framing is genuinely useful because it tells you where to spend. Distance is fixed unless you move premises. Relevance is category and content, and it is nearly free to fix. Prominence is reviews, mentions and links, and it is slow but compounding. Most restaurants spend on the one they cannot change and neglect the two they can.
- Relevance: categories, menu content, service areas
- Distance: fixed, so stop optimising for it
- Prominence: reviews, citations, local mentions
Name, address and phone, identically everywhere
Every place your details appear should show them the same way. Suite numbers written two ways, an old landline on a directory nobody maintains, or a former trading name still live on a listing site all muddy the signal. Work through the obvious ones: Google, Apple Maps, Bing Places, Facebook, Instagram, your delivery platform listings, and any local directory that ranks for your town. Fix them once and diarise a check every six months.
One page per location, and make it fast
If you run more than one site, each needs its own page with its own address, hours, menu and embedded map. A single contact page listing three branches will not rank for any of them properly. Speed matters more here than almost anywhere else on your site, because local searches are overwhelmingly mobile and often on patchy signal. A menu that arrives as a slow PDF is the most common own goal in the trade.
- A real HTML menu, not a PDF or an image
- Address and hours as text, not baked into a graphic
- Structured data for the restaurant and the menu
Content that answers what people actually type
Local searches are specific and boring: whether you deliver to a particular estate, whether you do gluten free, whether you are open on a bank holiday, whether you take bookings for eight. Every one of those is a question you can answer plainly on your own site, and the answer is a page or a section that will pick up traffic for years. Write the ones you get asked on the phone. You already know what they are.
What is not worth your money
Bought links, mass directory submissions and anything promising a fixed position in the map pack. There is no mechanism to guarantee a map position and the people selling one are describing an ad. Blog posts written to a keyword with nothing to say do not rank any more either. The honest summary of local SEO for a restaurant is that six unglamorous things done properly beat any retainer, and after that the returns come from reviews and time.
Questions, answered straight.
Not covered here? Just ask us.
How long does local SEO take to work?
Category and listing fixes can show within days. Review-driven prominence moves over months. Anybody promising a jump in weeks is either selling ads or getting lucky with a competitor going quiet.
Do I need a blog?
Not for local ranking. You need your location pages, your menu and your FAQs right. Write more only when you have something a customer genuinely asks about.
Does my delivery platform listing compete with me?
Often, yes. Marketplaces rank strongly for your own name because they have far more domain authority than you do. That is exactly why the ordering link on your Google profile is worth fixing: it intercepts the search before the marketplace does.
Is schema markup worth adding?
Yes, and it is a one-off job. Restaurant, menu and opening-hours markup help search engines read the page correctly, and increasingly help AI assistants quote you accurately. It will not outrank a wrong category, so do that first.
See it run your restaurant.
Twenty minutes on your menu and your numbers. We'll show you what actually changes in the first month and exactly what it costs. If it's not right for your restaurant, we'll tell you that instead.
- Live in days, not months
- We build your menu and train your staff
- No contract, and thirty days to change your mind
